Jasin MP admits that firm in Customs timber saga is his
KUALA LUMPUR: Jasin MP Datuk Mohd Said Yusof has admitted that he is the sole proprietor of a company involved in a recent case where the Malacca Customs was asked to “close one eye” over an illegal import of sawn timber from Indonesia.
He said he had apologised to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi over the matter, after a briefing for Umno division leaders at the Putra World Trade Centre here on Tuesday.
Mohd Said: ‘I’m allowed to do business. Why can’t MPs do business?’“I met him, I shook hands with him and said 'I minta maaf kalau I buat salah',” he told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday.
He, however, declined to reveal Abdullah's reaction.
The controversy was sparked by a newspaper report that an MP attempted to interfere with the work of the Customs department, which had seized a consignment of sawn timber. The consignment was seized because it had exceeded the limit allowed by the Malaysian Timber Council.
Mohd Said admitted that he was the sole proprietor of Binyu Sof Enterprise, the company involved in the controversy. He said he had been in the business for the past 10 years and his agency operated at the Sungai Rambai and Kuala Linggi barter trade ports.
“I am only interested in the ports because I own a forwarding agency,” he said.
“I’m allowed to do business. Why can’t MPs do business?”
He said there were three other agencies at Sungai Rambai and seven agencies at Kuala Linggi, including the one operated by him.
Parti Keadilan Rakyat president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail said MPs would avoid accountability if errant members were not referred for disciplinary action.
Asked about the latest developments in the controversy, Customs director-general Datuk Abdul Rahman Abdul Hamid said: “I don’t know anything about it.”
Ini lah MP yang sama menimbulkan isu :
